The History of Sandals
Greece (500 BCE)
In ancient Olympics, competitors ran barefoot until a technique was developed to attach the sole of the sandal to the strap with metal tacks. Before this, sandals broke easily. As soon as tacks could hold the sandal together, it offered greater sole traction to the ground and the crude running shoe was developed.
Egypt (4000 BCE)
In ancient Egypt, the sandal was a sign of power and rank, and even designated social class. Gold and jeweled sandals were for the king and his court, pastels for dignitaries with red and yellow being the only colors allowed for the middle class. Sandals were made of leather and were construction exactly the same and not made to accommodate the left or right foot.
Rome (44 BCE)
Sandal making played a large part during ancient Roman time for love and for war. Romans designed a military sandal with leather wrapped around the foot and ankle, enabling their legions to march throughout their very large empire. Legend has it that courtesans in ancient Rome arranged nails on the soles of their sandals to spell out FOLLOW ME in the dust of the street and thus created the original logo footprint.
Rome (1940's)
Flip flops are rubber imitations of zori, wooden sandals long worn in Japan. The first flip flops appeared after World War II as American soldiers brought Japanese zori back as souvenirs. Zori's are easily slipped on and off, important in a culture where shoes are constantly removed and put back on. In a tight kimono tying shoelaces would be impractical, one explanation for the popularity of the zori in Japan.
